Co-Production for Youth Entrepreneurship in Kenya

About The Project

Co-Production for Youth Entrepreneurship in Kenya is part of the Innovations for African Universities (IAU) Project that is funded by the British Council (Link to the IAU page

KCA University (Kenya) is partnering with the University of Nottingham (UK) and the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF, Kenya) on a project titled: Co-Production for Youth Entrepreneurship in Kenya. The project goal was informed by the disconnect and the low transition by youth from theory (entrepreneurship learning) to entrepreneurship practice. Kenyan Universities are not properly engaged in the overall entrepreneurship ecosystem, leaving the youth stranded after completing their undergraduate studies. University faculties are failing to provide a proper transition to students from what is taught in class to application in the world of entrepreneurship.

This project aims at covering that gap between what is taught in class and the practical entrepreneurship practice. To achieve this, the KCA University, Youth Enterprise Development Fund, Nottingham University partnership aims to:

  1. Develop creative, participatory research methodologies to capture lived experience of youth entrepreneurs to ascertain supply and demand gaps for their enterprises.
  2. Design teaching methods to integrate creativity processes within entrepreneurial training of youth through divergent and convergent futures thinking.
  3. Strengthen capacity and capability of YEDF to support youth entrepreneurship.
  4. Build an international network to facilitate knowledge sharing and transfer through joint research, article co-authorship, seminars, and conferences.
  5. Establish in the long term a lasting collaboration beyond the IAU funding to enable student and faculty exchange in Kenya and UK.
  6. Implementing the development of the Youth Entrepreneurship Resource Hub (YERH).

Research

The project has been divided into phases. Phase one involved Research that was done in four counties namely; Nairobi, Bungoma, Garissa and Makueni Counties.
