On March 7th, 2024, KCA University hosted its first-ever Tech Expo, a landmark event that brought together industry experts, tech gurus, and budding tech enthusiasts from the university community. The event provided a platform for knowledge sharing, mentorship, and exploration of emerging trends in technology. Organized by the School of Technology (SoT) in collaboration with the Division of Research, Innovation, and Outreach (RIO), the Tech Expo spotlighted advancements in software development, cybersecurity, networking, and other cutting-edge technologies.
The keynote speaker, Judy Kimani, Director of Partnerships and Digital Transformation at Britam, represented the CEO, Mr. Tom Gitogo. She emphasized Britam’s commitment to partnering with KCA University to support and sponsor future Tech Expos. “Britam is excited to collaborate with KCA University and ready to upscale innovative ideas developed by students,” she remarked, underscoring the importance of nurturing student innovation in today’s fast-paced tech landscape.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, reaffirmed KCA University’s dedication to embracing and adapting to technological changes. “We are proactive in engaging our students and are committed to helping them thrive in this rapidly evolving digital age,” she said.
The DVC of Research, Innovation, and Outreach, Prof. Vincent Onywera, highlighted the expo’s role in fostering a collaborative environment where students, staff, and industry experts can exchange ideas and gain hands-on experience. He noted, “The Tech Expo serves as a melting pot for technology enthusiasts, offering opportunities for real-world problem solving through activities like tech talks, panel discussions, hackathons, and mini summits.”
Key highlights of the event included a panel discussion featuring Albert Kimani, Director of Programs at Power Learn Project; Nancy Muriithi, Head of Programs at SheHacks KE; and Eric Mutuku from BParpus Limited. Their discussions delved into the latest industry challenges and opportunities for upcoming tech professionals.
The Developers’ Hackathon, one of the most anticipated segments of the event, was facilitated by a team from Africa’s Talking Ltd, led by Michael Kimathi, Head of Developer Community Africa, along with Graham Muhanga, SVP of Marketing and Partnerships, and Sylvia Jebet, Developer Relations Specialist. The hackathon attracted a diverse group of participants from various institutions across the country, with KCA University contributing the largest contingent.
This impressive turnout demonstrated the growing interest in tech innovation across Kenya’s universities. The event’s success highlighted KCA University’s commitment to creating opportunities for students to engage with the tech community and sharpen their skills in a competitive environment. The Tech Expo set a solid foundation for future collaborations and deeper engagement between students, industry professionals, and academia, promising a bright future for technology innovation in Kenya.
